Bauer at Night: The Boston Wine Festival’s Opening Night

When I first started working here, I knew that this crew is passionate about booze… but let me tell you, I didn’t realize how well they drink it too. Last Friday, for one of my first nights on the town with Howie, John, and Sue, we headed down to the Boston Wine Festival’s Opening Night at the Boston Harbor Hotel. It was a serious preview to one of the longest running and best wine festivals in the country.

A little foreground: we are big supporters of the Boston Wine Festival, celebrating it’s 25th year under the direction of our friend Chef Daniel Bruce.  The festival runs from January through March and includes over 50 wine tastings, dinners, and seminars on a variety of varietals (!) and topics. In addition to teaming up with Chef Bruce to choose some of wines that are featured, Howie hosts a few of the dinners as well. And if you like something you taste, you know who’s gonna get it for you – good ol’ Bauer.

But back to the main event: Opening Night is a little different than the other events. It featured tasting tables that previewed wines to be featured in other sessions, and an amazing buffet spread from Chef Bruce’s kitchen. In addition to a flute of Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut welcoming us in the reception, there were eight tables pouring phenomenal wines and what seemed like twice as many tables of amazing food. Our favorite wines of the night were 2009 Bernardus Estate Marinus Meritage (Carmel Valley), a powerful and finessed Bordeaux-blend; and 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese, a wildly refreshing Riesling that balanced full sweetness and fruit with a perfectly dry finish. We finished off the night with a bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape at the bar… but that’s a whole other story.

It was an incredible event and just a precursor of what’s to come. I highly recommend you check out one or more events happening this year – you can browse offerings and buy tickets at Check back for more updates on the festival and other fun things we find out about!
